There's also some U2 in Jonezetta, but the band lacks U2's taste for epic statements. This album, self-released in 2005 and recently reissued by ATO, is the work of a group that hasn't fully assimilated its influences but can paraphrase with winning enthusiasm. Horns give "Can't Hear You Coming" the oomph of '60s Stax-Volt soul, while "O.K., Alright" prances into late-'70s dance-punk. The band's debut album, "Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip," opens in a gentle mode with "Nothing Is Easy," which suggests the Lovin' Spoonful until the dirty guitar kicks in. If the Whigs are the most Southern of these three bands, that's because the Athens, Ga., trio's style is unabashedly rooted in '60s and '70s rock and soul - and because singer-guitarist Parker Gispert's voice has a down-home rasp. And while "Noticed" does have a yearning grandeur that suggests spiritual hunger, singer-keyboardist Paul Meany makes a point of addressing the object of his devotion as "girl." Embellished by synths and samples but driven by guitar, such songs as "Collapse" and "Break the Same" are primarily exercises in filling the room with grand, ascending sound.
